Mid-Century Modern Home Renovation: Primary Suite, Bathrooms & Basement
Greenleaf collaborated with Place Architecture to transform this mid-century modern home, bringing fresh life to the primary suite, three bathrooms, and a finished basement. The home, while full of character, faced challenges common to older properties—outdated plumbing, dark and confined spaces, and layouts that no longer worked for the family’s needs.
The primary suite was especially in need of reimagining. To access the original bathroom, the homeowners had to walk through a closet, and both the primary and guest showers felt cramped and awkward to use.
Bathroom Remodels with Comfort and Craftsmanship
The updated bathrooms now feel bright, open, and inviting, with thoughtful details throughout:
- Larger, more accessible showers with large-format tile and glass niche accents
- Kohler Anthem shower controls for a personalized experience
- Warm wood floating benches and custom cabinetry by Jeff Cooper
- New Marvin windows that invite natural light into each room
- Layered lighting from Visual Comfort that creates a welcoming atmosphere throughout the home
A More Functional Primary Suite
The reconfigured primary suite now offers a better flow, including a separate walk-in closet and a new pocket door to the bathroom, adding privacy and ease to the space.
Basement Updates
In the basement, the team installed new flooring, custom bar cabinetry, Marvin windows and a new door, and laundry room cabinetry to enhance both function and comfort.
Careful Craftsmanship with Unique Systems
One of the project’s complexities was working around the original hydronic heating system, with heat lines embedded in the plaster walls, ceilings, and tile floors. Using infrared technology, the team carefully mapped and adjusted the system, preserving its functionality while updating the bathrooms and surrounding spaces.
A Project Worth Celebrating
The best part? Seeing the homeowners enjoy their transformed home, right down to hosting a celebration with friends and family after the work was complete.
We approach every project with care, collaboration, and a deep respect for the homes and families we serve.

As an engineer, I truly appreciated Greenleaf’s attention to detail, their understanding of construction theory, and their willingness to take the time to do it right. And the dog? Well, I think he is still heartbroken over the absence of the crew that was willing to throw the Frisbee for him.

I cannot say enough good things about Greenleaf, George and Derrick. They were a complete pleasure to work with from start to finish. Extremely responsive, very honest and professional, and fantastic work. They kept to the schedule, and I really appreciated their input on several decisions – what was worth spending money on and where we could save costs. I was sad when the job was over that we wouldn’t get to see them anymore! I will absolutely use them for any future renovations, and strongly recommend them without reservation.

We recently completed a renovation of the back wing of our home with Greenleaf, and we are thrilled with the results. The renovation process is difficult under any circumstances, especially when you are living in the house, but Randy, our lead carpenter, took very good care of us and was extremely patient even when we were frustrated. Greenleaf does meticulous work, and our designer, Marci Lief, was terrifically creative, transforming some difficult spaces into gems.

I found Greenleaf Construction to be a reliable, knowledgeable, and cost-conscious roof deck construction company. They knew the best materials and had the carpentry skills to do the job the right way.

Greenleaf replaced our large, 2-story city deck with a very attractive, sturdy, composite deck. Every step was done professionally, from an initial thorough meeting with their team to plan the process with our lifestyle in mind and continued with excellent work habits of the carpenters and supervisors. The site was left neat and clean each day, and work commenced and was completed on schedule. I would recommend them for any home improvement project.

We hired Greenleaf for a complete remodel of our home including kitchen, bathrooms, and removing walls to create an open architecture. George Brown and his team did an exceptional job, exceeding our expectations. Our project manager, Derrick, was professional, responsive, and a pleasure to work with. Casey, our lead carpenter, was meticulous, down to the last detail. We appreciated the integrity and skill demonstrated by the entire team. We also were impressed with the creativity they brought to the project and that they worked hard to keep the scope within our budget. Highly recommended!
